WHAT IS NORTHVILLE YOUTH ASSISTANCE - NYA

Northville Youth Assistance is a volunteer supported organization which provides social services to youth and their families. The program offers professional counseling as well as the opportunity for a youth to establish a supportive relationship with a trained volunteer mentor. The purpose of the program is to assist youths in becoming mature and responsible adults, thereby strengthening the community and family life.

HOW DID NORTHVILLE YOUTH ASSISTANCE BEGIN?

Recognizing that youths are a family and community responsibility, the Northville Youth Assistance Program and NYA Commission were established in December, 1986. They were established under the Joint Service Agreement of the City and Charter Township of Northville. The Northville School District also pledged its support by providing office space.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

Northville Youth Assistance matches trained volunteer mentors with youths who are likely to benefit from additional guidance and friendship over an extended period of time. The Commission sets policy, addresses community problems as they relate to the student population, and works in cooperation with the director of the NYA Program. The director is the chief operating officer of the program and is charged with the administration of programs and services.

HOW DO VOLUNTEERS GET INVOLVED?

The volunteer mentor is a concerned citizen who shares one or more hours each week with a youth. All volunteers are carefully screened and interviewed before acceptance into the program. Each volunteer receives 15 hours of training before they are assigned to a youth. The volunteer also receives continual training through Special Training Sessions which are held each month. Program staff are always available to offer further guidance and support. Volunteers come from all walks of life and many communities in Western Wayne and Oakland Counties.
